International contemporary art fair "ArtInternational," which will take place at the Haliç Congress Center in Istanbul from Sept. 4-6, will host the Paul Kasmin Gallery, one of the world's most prestigious art galleries. The gallery attracted interest last year with the solo exhibition of Taner Ceylan. This year, Ceylan, who is known for his hyperrealist works, will premier his work "Satyr II" once again at Paul Kasmin Gallery's stand at ArtInternational. "Satyr II" is the latest work from his "Golden Age" series, examining rebirth and duality in Greek mythology.
As a half-goat and half-man mythological figure, satyrs refer to the animal nature in human beings and also human nature in animals. Ceylan said in a statement that although a satyr is depicted as a violent dilly-dallier who kidnaps young girls and men and then rapes them while destroying everything around him, in "Satyr II," he created a fragile and thoughtful character that discovers its inner world. "Satyr restrains its animal nature and the human being is reborn." "Reminiscent of a black-and-white photo taken in the early 20th century, the painting gives an extraordinary reality into a fictional tale," he said. His oil painting on canvas is a new sequence of "Satyr I," which was displayed at the Frieze New York Fair in recent months. Ceylan began creating his "Golden Age" series in 2013 and describes them as an open-ended and eternal tale.
There are other exciting names whose works will be displayed at Paul Kasmin Gallery's stand as well. The work of Chaim Soutine, one of the important names in abstract expressionism, and Walton Ford, who is renowned for his water color paintings, and who made a name for himself at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and Whitney Museum of American Art, will be shown in Turkey for the first time. The sculptures of Claude and Francois-Xavier Lalanne, who have deeply influenced American modern art with their personal and joint work since the 1960s, will also be on display at Paul Kasmin Gallery.
