Veteran painter opens her gardens to art lovers

The "Versus Art Project" is known for bringing pieces by distinguished artists to art lovers. The gallery is now organizing another show in collaboration with "Karşı Art Works." Galleries will be hosting works by one of the most celebrated artists in Turkey, Emel Şahinkaya, until April 11.The Versus Art Project, located in Beyoğlu, Istanbul, will introduce to art lovers one of Turkey's most significant artists, Emel Şahinkaya. Şahinkaya, who graduated from Istanbul State Fine Arts Academy in 1982, is a female artist who has attracted the attention of important art and literature people and has left her mark on the Turkish artistic landscape. Şahinkaya describes the gardens, which her paintings are mostly about, as the most peaceful form of the transcendental door of the universe. Şahinkaya transfers the handwritings of the soul to the canvas with her intended choice of melancholy while bringing a striking volume to the surface with the colors, lights and shadows. "Some wait in peace, some wait nervously; for Cemal, my gardens were full of terror," famous poet and writer Cemal Süreyya said."The Gardens of Terror" is a remarkable expression used by Süreyya to describe Emel Şahinkaya's work. The painter has been accused by artists, like İlhan Berk and Ece Ayhan and Cihat Burak, of not being aware of herself. Şahinkaya, who created about 100 large and small oil paintings, shows in her work the influences she has clearly gained from the likes of Caravaggio and Gaugin. She will meet art lovers at the Versus Art Project and the Karşı Art Works at Beyoğlu Hanif Han.
