Regarded as the one of the most important architectural masterminds of all time, and the first "starchitect" as it is characterized today, Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan will be commemorated on the anniversary of his death with a multimedia, technology-heavy exhibition titled "Mimar Sinan and Masterpieces of the Creative Genius." The most comprehensive display on Sinan, who is the supreme symbol of Ottoman architectural history, will run from April 9 to May 31 at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University (MSGSÜ) Tophane-i Amire Culture and Art Center. The architect, who shed light on both the architecture of his era as well as the present, contributed to Turkish culture along with world architectural heritage with his unique constructions. His genius and works, which marked the golden era of Ottoman architecture during the 16th century, are regarded as "masterpieces of human creativity" by UNESCO's World Heritage Centre. Among his masterpieces, the Sehzade Mosque is referred to as his "apprenticeship work" followed by the Süleymaniye Mosque as his "craftmanship work," and the Selimiye Mosque as his "mastership."Co-organized by MSGSÜ, the Mimar Sinan Research and Application Center, MSGSÜ Department of Interior Architecture and Allevents, the exhibition aims to better educate the public about the life of the great architect, help people have a better understanding of his works and increase his recognition around the world. The exhibition, which is considered the most comprehensive display about Sinan, will feature all the works of the esteemed architect including his drawings and models. Apart from the classical techniques, the works of Sinan will come to life with applications that prioritize user interaction, stereoscopic systems, augmented reality, video mapping and 3-D animation techniques. "Mimar Sinan and Masterpieces of the Creative Genius," which is designed by Tamirhane Architecture, will study Sinan as an architect, town planner, engineer and organizer, while examining the social, cultural and architectural environment of the period that established a foundation for his outstanding architectural and artistic virtuoso. The display will also thoroughly analyze his life starting from his birthplace in Kayseri's Ağırnas village, his collaborations with other architects, the construction process of his finished and unfinished works and present an enchanting life story to visitors. The display will take place at the magnificent 2,000-square-meter exhibition hall of Tophane-i Amire, which was built in the 15th century. The life and works of the master architect, who has been a source of inspiration to the architects all over the world, will be showcased under different titles and sections. "Ağırnas: His Childhood and Youth" will focus on the period and region where Sinan lived in until the age of 21, "16th Century Ottoman Period and Art" will investigate the effects of the art of the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century and its territorial expansion over three different continents, and "Hassa Mimarlar Ocağı," which refers to the association of architects affiliated with the Ottoman court, will study Sinan as a leader and compare the association to present day architecture studios. While the section "Buildings and Their Founders" will examine works such as religious buildings, water-distribution systems and bridges from their founders' point of view, the "Inventory Section" will feature documents concerning the life of Sinan, which have been gathered from the library of the Blue Mosque and the Topkapı Palace Museum. Lastly, "Unfinished Projects" will focus on Sinan's projects that were not realized, such as the Suez Canal, the Black Sea-Marmara Canal and the Golden Horn Bridge - a project that was eventually finished but not built at that time. The exhibition will run for two months and echo the style of the Ottoman Empire's architecture through Sinan, who produced nearly 400 masterpieces throughout his life, and the organizers expect it to be their most popular exhibition. The exhibition will draw visitors with the historical pattern of the period via touchscreens, applications for smartphones and tablets, screen walls, kiosk applications and presentations in 2-D and 3-D. The video-mapping installation, which will take place at the venue's single dome section, will be one of the most impressive presentations of the exhibition. The masterpieces of Sinan will be projected onto the dome via video mapping, and the visitors will be reminded of his works accompanied by music. Moreover, conferences, concerts, tours and company launchings will take place in parallel with the display, and help the organization mirror the "Age of Sinan in Istanbul." The display was designed with the help of a consultative committee composed of architects, historians, academics, museology experts, art historians, and other experts including Bülent Özer, Cemal Kafadar, Demet Binan, Doğan Kuban, Fethiye Erbay, Gülru Necipoğlu, Haluk Dursun, Jale Nejdet Erzen, Reha Günay, Selçuk Mülayim, Sitare Bakır Turan, Semra Germaner, Suphi Saatçi, Zeynep Ahunbay, Nurcan Yazıcı, Cengiz Bektaş, Ersu Pekin and Nezih Başgelen. The "Mimar Sinan and Masterpieces of the Creative Genius" exhibition will be displayed in Ankara, Bursa, Kayseri and Eskişehir as well, in addition to many international platforms in Europe, the U.S., the Middle East and East Asia in 2015 and 2016. When the display completes its tour both in Turkey and abroad, all materials and the inventory will be donated to the MSGSÜ Mimar Sinan Research Center and Museum, which is currently under construction.
