A Gülen-linked Turkish professor, Osman Özsoy suggested that a divine hand will fix everything that is wrong in Turkey only a month before the July 15 coup attempt and claimed that not a single Turkish citizen would take to the streets to protect democracy.
In a news show aired on STV, a television channel linked to the Gülenist Terror Organization (FETÖ) on June 15, Özsoy, a well-known ideologist supporting the terrorist group, almost foreshadowed a coup attempt in Turkey, saying "the situation in Turkey cannot continue this way but I will not say the future of this country is dark. In fact, Turkey's future is unbelievably bright. The current period will soon come to an end,"
The professor further said in the video that he wished he had become a colonel instead of a professor so he would have had the chance to contribute more during the period.
After the program's host asked him how he would have contributed more to the country, Özsoy replied in a secretive tone "I said it and it's over now, don't ask again,"
First claiming that the 50 percent of support for President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan does not mean anything in reality, the Gülenist academician said the Turkish people will not take to the streets in case of a curfew.
"All the coups take place on Friday in Turkey and not a single person could leave their homes, not even imams to lead Friday prayers. There is no sensitivity for protecting democracy in this country, they are useless crowds. Not even one intellectual will oppose the curfew," Özsoy said.
After calling on people to stay calm and wait for a happy development "in very near future", Özsoy then said the members of the Hizmet (Gülen) Movement will soon have very busy days.
Only a month after Özsoy's controversial remarks, an illegitimate coup indeed took place in Turkey by the Gülenist soldiers and military officers. However, thousands of people got on tanks, disarmed coup soldiers and took back control of raided institutions after President Erdoğan's plea for citizens to take to the streets and stand up for democracy.
Özsoy is a Turkish academician and TV personality known for his close ties with the Gülen Movement. He hosted several television shows on the Gülen Movement-affiliated channel Samanyolu TV and also worked as a history teacher at the Gülen-linked Fatih College.
On July 15, a group of rogue soldiers linked to the FETÖ attempted to topple the democratically elected government in Turkey and bring martial law in effect.
The attempt was prevented by the military loyal to the government along with police units and millions of people in favor of democracy. Over 230 civilians were killed and 2,191 people were injured.
Opposition parties have united in condemnation of the coup attempt, denouncing it in the harshest terms and underscoring their determination to preserve democracy and the rule of law in Turkey.
