A Twitter account used by the German Embassy in Ankara (@GermanyinTurkey) was following Twitter accounts linked to the Gülenist putschists, until Turkish journalist Yusuf Özhan (@Yusuf_Ozhan) drew attention to the social media connection, after which the embassy account unfollowed these accounts.
After the failed coup on July 15, Özhan noticed that the Twitter account used by the German Embassy in Ankara was following the account of a colonel involved in the Gülenist putsch, Ömer Kulaç (@kula_mer). "German Embassy follows putschist colonel Ömer Kulaç" Yusuf Özhan wrote on Twitter on July 20. This was not the only Gülenist-linked account which the German Embassy account followed.
As of July 20, the German Embassy was following 868 accounts, 50 of these linked to members of the Gülenist Terror Organization (FETÖ). The following day, the embassy started to clean its Twitter account.
